A packed open-plan office with headphones half on, a crowded family dinner where everyone’s talking except you, or a party where you already know almost everyone’s name, and it still doesn’t help.

If you’ve ever quietly wondered ‘why do I feel lonely’ in exactly these kinds of rooms, you’re not imagining it, and also not the only one asking. Actually, researchers have studied this precise experience directly, using smartphone check-ins, national surveys, and long-running health studies. And they keep landing on the same finding. The number of people who happen to be near you barely predicts whether you feel lonely at all.

Being around people and feeling connected to them turn out to be two different things, and the data on where they overlap and where they don’t is far more specific than most people expect.

The quick answer

Loneliness is the gap between the relationships you have and the ones you ‘actually’ want. If you’ve ever asked yourself ‘why do I feel lonely’ despite having people around, consider this: in one study of 6,994 older Americans, 52% of people who felt lonely were not socially isolated at all. Feeling overcrowded, separately, raised the odds of feeling lonely in that exact moment by 39%.

Half of lonely people aren’t lonely for lack of company

To understand why loneliness and physical isolation so often come apart, it helps to look at a study that measured both in the same population simultaneously. Barnes et al. sampled 6,994 adults (65 years and older) randomly from the United States, where they administered an existing loneliness scale as well as a separate social contact scale. The design is what makes the loneliness vs social isolation distinction empirically testable rather than assumed.

When the sample was divided by both measures, there were four groups, of which approximately 9.8% were lonely but not isolated, 20.6% were isolated but not lonely, 9.1% were both, and 60.5% were neither.

The arithmetic hiding inside those percentages is the real finding. Among everyone in the study counted as lonely, just over half (52%) weren’t socially isolated at all. They had contact, but it simply wasn’t the right one.

Figure 1: Most lonely older Americans are not socially isolated.

Source: Barnes et al., Aging & Mental Health 26(7), 2022 · n=6,994 · fieldwork 2018–19

A similar trend is noticeable outside the United States. Four long-running British cohort studies found the overlap between “lonely” and “isolated” stayed under 16% at every age band tested. Prior to the pandemic, there was a similar picture in the European Social Survey: approximately 8.6% of adults reported frequent feelings of loneliness, and roughly 20.8% were socially isolated, although these are separate groups.

Loneliness and isolation go together sometimes, but they’re not the same condition, and a lot of well-meaning advice treats them as though they were. So, it ends up aimed at the wrong half of the problem for a majority of lonely people.

A support group built around getting isolated people more social contact, for instance, does very little for someone who already has contact and is lonely anyway. The intervention has to match the actual gap, not the assumed one, and that starts with recognizing which of the two problems someone is facing before trying to solve it.

What loneliness actually measures — the gap, not the count

Part of the confusion comes from using the idea of ‘feeling lonely’ as shorthand for being physically alone, bearing in mind that researchers define it very differently. The WHO frames loneliness as the painful feeling that results from a gap between one’s social connection and the association they want.

That distinction has a name in the research literature. The psychologist Robert Weiss argued decades ago that loneliness isn’t one feeling but at least two. One is Emotional loneliness, the ache of missing a single close, trusted attachment. The second one is Social loneliness, which is a separate ache that comes from missing a wider network of people you belong to.

The two don’t always move together. Someone can have one deep relationship and still feel emotionally lonely because it isn’t quite the right one. Another person can have a wide, active social circle and still feel socially lonely because none of it goes below the surface. Whichever kind an individual is dealing with, a solution built for the other tends not to help, which is a big part of why generic advice about “getting out more” so often misses the mark.

Being in a crowd made people 39% lonelier — measured in the moment

Researchers at King’s College London wanted to know something specific about lonely in a crowd experiences. Does loneliness shift depending on where you physically are? Or does it sit there as a fixed trait?
They built Urban Mind (a smartphone app) and pinged almost 400 subjects 3 times daily for 2 weeks with the question: “Am I feeling lonely like right now?” The researchers also asked if the place felt crowded, whether people around them appeared to be helpful if called upon and whether there was any nature to be seen.

The possibility of someone feeling lonely in a given moment rose by 39% when they perceived their surrounding was overcrowded. Denser neighborhoods pushed the odds up too, by roughly 8% with each step up in local population density. This is a finding with obvious relevance for anyone lonely in a big city wondering whether the density itself is part of the problem.

The same dataset explained what pushed loneliness down. Feeling that people nearby shared your values cut the odds by 21%, while simply seeing something natural, trees, sky, water, or a bird, reduced the probability of loneliness by 28%.

The main sample skewed young and mostly female, and the density findings were limited to England and Wales. The numbers point to that specific population more precisely than they describe everyone. Even so, the direction lines up with what a lot of people already sense: a packed subway car and a room full of close friends can hold the same number of bodies and feel entirely different.

Table 1: What raised and lowered loneliness in real time.

Factor

Effect on odds of feeling lonely

95% CI

Feeling overcrowded

+39%

1.20–1.60

Higher population density (per decile)

+8%

1.05–1.11

Feeling socially included

−21%

0.77–0.82

Contact with nature

−28%

0.65–0.80

Source: Hammoud et al., Scientific Reports 11:24134, 2021. With 11,590 momentary reports, the size of a crowd was only a slight predictor of how lonely a person felt; the real predictor was the quality of people in that crowd.

The more participants believed that their values were shared and people would help if necessary, the less likely they were to feel lonely at that moment. So, belonging isn’t about proximity, but perceived alignment. You can be surrounded by familiar people and still feel entirely alone if that sense of shared ground is missing.

The same was true for natural environments. Even brief exposure to trees, water, or open sky reduced momentary loneliness independently of social context. In this context, nature appears to address something adjacent: a sense of being held by an environment rather than lost in it.

More importantly, the two effects reinforced each other. When both were present simultaneously, nature’s protective benefit grew stronger than it was alone. This is a statistically significant interaction (ratio of odds ratios 1.18, p<0.001). The practical reading of that interaction is specific: the antidote to feeling lonely in a crowd isn’t fewer people around you. It’s one person in that crowd who actually feels like yours, and ideally something living in view that isn’t a screen.

One in five married people are lonely every week

If loneliness were mainly about proximity to other people, marriage should solve it more or less on its own. It doesn’t, at least not reliably. Results from a nationwide survey of U.S. adults in early 2024 and sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association revealed that nearly one-third (30%) of adults felt lonely at least once per week and 10% felt lonely daily.

The weekly loneliness rates were lower for married adults compared to single adults (22% vs. 39%). Nevertheless, this 22% is more than one in five married individuals who report feeling lonely most weeks within their relationship, where they’re expected to be closest.

The same poll asked what people do when loneliness hits. Roughly half reach for a distraction, TV or social media. About 41% go for a walk. Only 3% said online communities gave them a real sense of belonging, compared with 65% for families, a gap that suggests whatever people are getting from scrolling isn’t quite what they’re missing.

The emotional-versus-social distinction covered earlier explains a lot of this. A spouse can fully satisfy the need for one close, trusted attachment and still leave someone hungry for a wider social world, or vice versa. Marriage answers a specific kind of need, but was never designed to meet all of them. Expecting one relationship to cover every form of connection a person requires tends to leave both people in it feeling like they’re failing at something that was never really solvable that way.

This shows up in couples who, on paper, look like the picture of a solved social life: two incomes, a shared home, a calendar full of family obligations, and still one or both partners quietly wondering why none of it feels like enough. That doesn’t insinuate the relationship is broken, most of the time. Rather, it means it’s carrying a job, covering every kind of connection a person needs, that no single relationship was ever built to do alone, partly answering the all-too-common question: Why do I feel lonely in a relationship?

The friend you see constantly and can’t talk to

Even when the missing piece isn’t a partner, it’s often not a shortage of people either. Someone asking why I feel lonely even though I have friends may do so because having friends and having those that are close are measurably different.

A widely cited survey from the Survey Center on American Life found the share of American men reporting zero close friends jumped from 3% in 1990 to 15% in 2021, while those with six or more reduced from 55% to 27%. However, it’s worth noting that the 1990 figure came from a phone survey and the 2021 figure from an online one, so some of that gap is likely the survey method talking, though the underlying direction still holds.

The same Survey Center report found something else too. Across all US adults, not just men, 12% had no close social ties at all in 2021. That’s defined as having discussed something important with anyone in the past six months. It’s the specific thing that seems to be eroding; not acquaintances, but the smaller circle who get the version of your life you don’t perform for everyone else.

We’re not imagining it: 35 minutes a day, down from 41

It’s tempting to write off the idea of a friendship recession as a subjective sentiment rather than a documented fact. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics measures Americans’ daily activities, and the data reflects the trend toward feeling disconnected. For example, the number of Americans who socialized or communicated with someone on an average day fell from 38% in 2015 to 30% in 2025. Their average time of interaction decreased by 15 per cent (from 41 minutes a day to 35 minutes a day) over a decade.

The decline is greater for friends alone. Social involvement with friends decreased by about 20 hours a month from 2003 to 2020. That’s a much bigger decrease than the estimated 10 hours a month decrease in time with coworkers and neighbors, or the 6.5 hours a month decrease in time with extended family. Friendships, in other words, appear to be absorbing more of the loss than any other category of relationship.

There’s no clean explanation attached to any of it. The decline predates smartphones by well over a decade, and nothing in the data isolates a single cause — phones, longer working hours, more people living alone, or something else entirely. Researchers who study the trend are generally careful not to blame technology alone, since the shift toward less time spent socializing was already visible in some measures before smartphones existed.

What the numbers do confirm is that drifting away from people isn’t a personal failing, but a measured, national-scale shift, and it’s continuing rather than leveling off. That means the friend group someone had five years ago has likely thinned out, even if nothing dramatic happened to explain it.

Table 2: Americans are spending measurably less time together

Measure

2015

2025

Change

Share socialising on an average day

38%

30%

−8 pts

Minutes spent socialising per day

41

35

−15%

Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Time Use Survey, 2025 results released June 2026.

The same survey said 40% of young people are lonely — and 7%

Anyone trying to answer ‘how common is loneliness?’ runs into a genuine problem fast: the number changes dramatically depending on exactly how researchers ask the question, sometimes using the very same dataset.

A well-known 2018 survey of 55,000 people, developed with Brunel University London and several partner institutions, asked people directly whether they felt lonely. The headline result was striking: 16-to-24-year-olds topped the list, with 40% saying they felt lonely often or very often, compared with 29% of 65-to-74-year-olds and 27% of people over 75.

When researchers later rescored that same underlying data using a method that combined frequency, duration, and intensity together, the picture flipped. Roughly 7% of respondents counted as often or always lonely by that stricter measure, and middle-aged adults, not young people, came out loneliest overall.

Table 3: Why loneliness statistics disagree with each other.

Source

Year

Who was asked

How it was measured

Headline

WHO Commission

2025

Global, all ages

Synthesis of national surveys

1 in 6 lonely

APA Healthy Minds

2024

2,200 US adults

Direct question, CDC definition, weekly frequency

30% weekly, 10% daily

Barnes et al.

2018–19

6,994 US adults 65+

UCLA-3 scale

18.9% lonely

BBC Loneliness Experiment

2018

55,000 self-selected, 16–99

Direct question, “often or very often”

40% of 16–24s

Brunel re-analysis, same data

2018

38,000 UK subset

Frequency × duration × intensity

7% often or always lonely

The spread is not sloppiness — it is the definition problem. Direct questions (“are you lonely?”) collide with stigma and under-reporting; multi-item scales like UCLA-3 never use the word and pick up more people. This table is itself a story.

Gender adds another layer of disagreement. A cross-cultural analysis of that same 2018 dataset, spanning 46,000 people across 237 countries, found loneliness ran higher in men than women overall, with young men in individualistic cultures reporting the most loneliness of any group.

Coverage of the WHO’s 2025 global report points the opposite direction, with Health Policy Watch reporting that female adolescents showed the highest rates in the underlying data and older men the lowest. Neither result is wrong exactly. They’re measuring various populations with different tools, and any single loneliness statistic is really a snapshot of who got asked and precisely how.

When loneliness stops being a mood and becomes a health risk

Loneliness isn’t only an internal experience. Left unaddressed, chronic loneliness carries measurable physical and mental health consequences that researchers have only recently been able to quantify at a global scale.

The World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Connection released its first major global report in mid-2025, drawing on national survey data from dozens of countries.

Roughly 1 in 6 people worldwide are affected by loneliness, and even more, loneliness and social isolation together are linked to an estimated 871,000 deaths a year. That is close to 100 an hour, and it’s largely through elevated risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

People who are lonely are about twice as likely to become depressed, and lonely teenagers have a 22% higher chance of ending up with lower grades or qualifications.

The burden isn’t distributed the way most coverage assumes. Around 24% of people living in low-income countries experience loneliness, compared to roughly 11% in high-income countries.

The burden of loneliness among young people is disproportionate, with 17-21% of the global population of 13-to 29-year-olds feeling lonely everywhere, and young teens feeling the worst of all ages. Approximately one-third of older adults and one-fourth of adolescents are socially isolated worldwide.

The report was made available alongside the first-ever resolution on social connection adopted by the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2025. It encouraged member states to normalize loneliness and make it a part of national policy, and not the responsibility of the individual.

This marks a paradigm shift for the condition: embedding it into the health policy framework transforms the understanding of loneliness from a uniquely subjective experience to a measurable public health phenomenon.

The signs that it’s chronic rather than passing

Not every lonely evening needs intervention. A quiet Tuesday night or a week after a change of scenery is situational, and ends as things evolve. It can manifest as feeling lonely for no reason, with no obvious cause.

Chronic loneliness is fundamentally distinct in duration and intensity: the same underlying feeling, just prolonged and reinforcing itself over time. Those who have studied the frequency-duration-intensity framework employ the same scoring process as the 7% figure aforementioned. Generally, they look for loneliness that persists across most days for weeks or months, rather than the one tied to a specific, identifiable event.

Someone dealing with a passing version usually still has moments of genuine connection scattered through their week. Those who suffer from the chronic one, however, find those periods becoming infrequent or “empty.”
Over time, it can make you more guarded and likely to read neutral looks or pauses as rejection. That makes reaching out feel hardest exactly when it would help most.

The practical distinction matters because the fixes differ. Situational loneliness usually ends on its own. The chronic kind won’t, at least not without deciding to change. This can entail getting professional support, a real shift in social habits, or both.

What actually closes the gap

In general, crowds are not the enemy nor is solitude the real cure. If you want to know how to stop feeling lonely around people, avoid vague advice like “get out more.” Here are a few specific things that basically work.

Feeling included matters more than headcount. Having people around who share your values reduces loneliness significantly, and so does contact with nature. Neither requires a big life change. Both are closer to habits than to solutions.

Some health systems have started treating loneliness formally through social prescribing, where doctors refer people toward community groups, walking clubs, or shared activities, instead of or alongside medication. But it’s an emerging approach, and it’s evidence that loneliness is not just something that people need to “put themselves out there” more, and it’s better addressed by structured social contact.

It also helps to know about something social psychologists call the “liking gap.” This is the consistent tendency for people to underestimate how much the person they just spoke with enjoyed the conversation. After most interactions, the other person liked you more than you think they did. So that feeling that you didn’t quite connect? More often than not, it’s just wrong.

Finally, the friendship data points toward something slower and harder to manufacture. Close friendships are usually developed over a period of time through frequent contact, sometimes even inconvenient ones. There’s no shortcut that reliably substitutes for simply showing up more than once with the same people.

FAQs

Can you be lonely without being alone?

Yes, that’s possible. Of the 6,994 individuals who were studied by Barnes et al., the vast majority were not lonely in the sense of lacking in contact with others. They were surrounded by people, but it was just not the right fit.

What’s the difference between loneliness and solitude?

Solitude is basically time spent with oneself willingly and is usually restful. But loneliness shows up uninvited and drains you. Interestingly, 41% of the BBC Loneliness Experiment participants said loneliness sometimes had a positive impact, in that it made them want to make a change in their social relationships.

Why do I feel lonely in a relationship?

It is possible for a partner in a relationship to satisfy one type of need while meeting only a small portion of another need. This is why one might get the feeling of loneliness. It’s no wonder that about 22% of married adults in the US experience loneliness once per week.

Is loneliness a mental illness?

No, it’s not. Loneliness is a feeling, and it increases the likelihood of suffering from depression by about twofold, so don’t ignore it if it persists.

Does loneliness really affect physical health?

Yes, at the population level. As many as 871,000 people die each year from loneliness and social isolation, mostly as a result of increased risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and dementia, according to the WHO. But this doesn’t mean loneliness will cause any of these for you personally. It’s a pattern seen across large groups of people.

How common is loneliness?

Global estimates put it at roughly 1 in 6 people, per the WHO’s 2025 findings, while weekly loneliness among US adults runs closer to 30%. Different instruments and populations give varying numbers.

Editorial note: If you’ve been lonely for a while, it could be a good idea to consult a doctor, therapist or helpline in your country. That’s a sign worth acting on, not something to carry alone.

Envision this.
