Zoosk has been around long enough to appear on nearly every list of the “best dating apps”, and it keeps earning a spot in the comparison. Whether it deserves space on your phone and a place in your budget, however, is a different matter.

This review covers what there is to know about how Zoosk works today, what it costs, and where it falls short, so you can decide whether the upgrade is worth your money.

What is Zoosk?

Zoosk is a dating app available on the web, iOS, and Android, and one account works across all three. The company lists 60 million+ members and 1.6 million messages sent daily, according to its homepage, and it describes the service as designed for serious relationships. The page title goes a step further by pitching Zoosk to ambitious, educated singles.

The matching approach is straightforward. Zoosk says it learns what you want as you use the app and promises matches that get refined daily around what you like. Advanced filters get a mention too, sitting alongside the smart matchmaking.

Behind the app is Black Cap, a company that operates a portfolio of dating brands. You can get Zoosk from the App Store or Google Play, or sign up on the website.

Zoosk Features

Zoosk divides its tools between a free account and a paid membership called Zoosk+. The sections below follow that split, beginning with what you get for free.

The Free Account

A free account covers the basics: you can build a profile, browse members, and send ‘Likes.’ Carousel is included, along with up to three SmartPick recommendations a day.

Zoosk says the free account can stay free for as long as you like, so no countdown is running.

Zoosk’s feature comparison spells out how the two tiers differ. These are the main points:

Feature Free account Zoosk+
Sending messages and chatting Not available Included
Read Receipts Not available Included
SmartPick recommendations Up to 3 a day No set daily limit

SmartPick

SmartPick delivers a daily set of members Zoosk thinks you might click with, drawn from your profile, stated preferences, and how you’ve behaved on the app.

Each suggestion gets a heart if you’re interested or an ‘X’ if you’re not. Nobody sees your votes. You’re only notified when the other person hearts you back too.

Free members get up to three picks a day. Paid members have no fixed cap, though the actual number still depends on who is available and compatible.

To sharpen the results, finish your profile, add photos, stay active, update your SmartPick Survey, and respond to your picks regularly.

Carousel

Carousel serves up one member at a time, showing a photo and an age. You pick Like or Pass, then move on to the next person. A Like notifies the other member, and a mutual Like turns into a Connection that shows up on your Chat page.

Explore

Explore is one of two ways to view Search results. Rather than a single profile, it shows a grid of members, with each square carrying a photo, name, age, and any shared interests. A green dot flags who’s online. The closest members come first, with farther ones appearing as you scroll.

Passed on someone by mistake? A countdown bar gives you a brief chance to undo it. The pass becomes permanent as soon as the profile fades, and it can’t be recovered.

Undos are a consumable item, so you may have to buy more when they run out. Zoosk covers the details on its Explore page, including the note that starting a message from Explore needs Zoosk+.

Boost, Crush, and Undo

Zoosk has retired Coins. Balances that existed at the time were converted into Boosts automatically, with the number based on the old balance. A Boost raises your visibility, and you can buy them whenever you’d like extra attention.

Instant Crush & Undo is a one-time purchase open to free and paid members. It includes up to five Crushes a day, a way to signal extra interest beyond a regular Like, plus Undos for profiles you passed on by mistake.

Messaging and Zoosk+

Here, the free ride ends. Messaging and chat both require Zoosk+, and the membership adds Read Receipts, which show when someone has opened a message you sent. Zoosk doesn’t sell Read Receipts separately.

Premium Messaging is an optional add-on for subscribers. It lets any member reply to the messages you send, paying or not. Without it, a free member would need Zoosk+ to write back.

Zoosk Costs

Zoosk keeps its price tag behind the curtain. You won’t find a rate card on the homepage, and the numbers only appear once you sign up and head to the upgrade screen. Here are the current packages:

Zoosk+ plan Monthly rate Full-term total
1 month $34.99 $34.99
3 months $24.99 $74.97
6 months $14.99 $89.94
12 months $9.99 $119.88

The longer you sign up for, the lower your monthly fee. Paying for a year at $9.99 per month is around 70% less per month than a month-to-month subscription. Use these numbers as a guide, since you can only see your total amount when you check out, and the iOS and Android apps may charge a different price from the website.

Add-Ons

Boosts, Instant Crush & Undo, and Premium Messaging are all sold separately from the Zoosk+ subscription. None of them are mandatory. Each adds to your total, though. So decide ahead of time which ones you’d actually use.

Refunds and Final Sales

Cancelling turns off automatic renewal without ending the current period early. Premium access continues until that period runs out, then the account reverts to basic.

Zoosk states that every purchase is final and non-refundable, renewals included. That makes timing important. Hence, cancel ahead of the renewal date rather than after it. The Terms of Service cover cancellation deadlines and other conditions.

Getting More Out of Zoosk

A few of these tips come straight from Zoosk’s own guidance. The others are simple ways to avoid paying for things you won’t use.

Fill In Your Profile and Stay Active

Zoosk builds recommendations from your profile, preferences, and activity. So, a fuller profile gives it more to work with. Add photos, finish the profile fields, and keep your SmartPick Survey current. Logging in regularly and responding to your daily picks also feeds the system.

Try More Than One Way to Browse

‘SmartPick’, ‘Carousel’, and ‘Explore’ each present a member differently. ‘SmartPick’ is a daily shortlist, ‘Carousel’ is a one-at-a-time stream, and ‘Explore’ is a grid ordered by distance. Switching among them gives you a wider view of who’s on the app.

Check the Price Before You Pay

Open the upgrade screen and read the checkout amount before committing. Compare the website with the app store if both are options. A coupon code only helps on a new website purchase. Pick any add-ons you actually want, and write down your renewal date so you can cancel in time.

Who Zoosk Suits

Zoosk works well for people who want a large pool, like having different ways to browse, and don’t mind paying to start conversations once they know the app suits them.

The free plan makes that trial easy. It’s a weaker match for anyone who wants to message for free, dislikes extras layered over a subscription, or can’t accept a non-refundable renewal.

Staying Safe on Zoosk

Zoosk has some built-in protections, and a few everyday habits fill in the rest.

What Zoosk Provides

Zoosk says Profile Verification helps confirm that members are who they claim to be. Blocking and reporting tools are available, too, and the Help Center has a dedicated category for safety and privacy. Black Cap, the parent company, notes in the site footer that it doesn’t run background checks on members or subscribers.

Sensible Habits

Also, remember to:

  • Treat Profile Verification as one signal among several.
  • Keep early conversations on the app.
  • Hold back personal details until trust is earned.
  • Pick a public place for a first meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zoosk free?

You can join Zoosk for free. The free account can remain open for as long as you want. You can use browsing, Likes, Carousel, and three SmartPicks per day. Messaging requires a Zoosk+ subscription.

How much is Zoosk+?

That depends on the plan length and any current offer. Zoosk says checkout always shows the exact amount, and prices in the apps may differ from the website.

Can I message without a subscription?

No. Starting a conversation takes Zoosk+. Premium Messaging is a separate paid option that lets other members reply to a subscriber.

What replaced Zoosk Coins?

Nothing directly. Coins were retired, and leftover balances became Boosts. Boosts can be bought for visibility, and Instant Crush & Undo is offered as a one-time purchase.

Will Zoosk refund me?

Zoosk says all purchases are final, renewals included. Cancelling only prevents the next charge.

Is Zoosk safe?

Zoosk offers Profile Verification, blocking, and reporting. Black Cap says it doesn’t run background checks, so some caution on your side is still needed.

Does Zoosk work on a computer?

Yes. Zoosk runs on the web as well as in the iOS and Android apps, all under a single account.

How fast does support respond?

The Help Center indicates the team typically replies within one business day. Use the Contact Us link on the Help Center to reach the team.

The Verdict

Zoosk is a big, flexible dating app, and its free tier is solid enough for a proper test drive. Conversations happen on the paid side. Hence, look at the checkout price first and remember that renewals are final.

Messaging is the feature that should drive your decision, because it marks the line between browsing and actually talking. Free accounts don’t expire, which means you can take your time before upgrading.
